Course content

At the end of the course the cadet will have a broad knowledge in basic electromagnetism.

The course covers the following academic content: charges, electric forces and electric fields, Gauss's law, electric potential, capacitors, dielectric media, magnetic forces and magnetic fields, Ampère's law, electromagnetic induction and induced fields, Faraday's law, electromagnetic travelling waves, electromagnetic vessel signature.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:

  • describe key concepts and methods in electromagnetism
  • explain basic relationships between various phenomena in both electromagnetism and practical applications

Skills

After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:

  • apply a relevant set of concepts and formulae
  • use her or his knowledge to create mathematical models of selected phenomena
  • reason systematically, solve problems in electromagnetism, and provide details of the results
  • provide details of fundamental phenomena and practical applications in electromagnetism.

General competences

After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:

  • explain electromagnetism and relevant applications
  • communicate with others about the subject
Sensor system

Examination is carried out according to the Regulations for Admission, Studies and Examinations (in Norwegian, “Forskrift om opptak, studier og eksamen”) at the Norwegian Defence University College.
