ING3302 Applied Linear Algebra and Statistics
The course will give the cadet an academic basis in probability calculation and statistics that other courses can build on, as well as knowledge of methods and economic models as an important tool in problem solving related to service in the Navy.
The course is planned to be given by a civilian provider.
Knowledge
After completing the course, the cadet is able to:
- explain how the tools, methods and theory of linear algebra can be used to solve practical problems
- explain important theories within the core areas of probability calculation and statistics
- refer to several options within stochastic models
- describe the foundations of the theory of decision analysis (dicision where risks are involved)
- explain key concepts, results and methods within stochastic methods, as well as when different results and methods can be applied to solve engineering and other practical problems
Skills
After completing the course, the cadet is able to:
- use relevant mathematical and statistical systems of symbols and formulas and manipulate symbols and formulas
- solve complicated technical problems using methods of linear algebra
- formulate and solve stochastic problems, both analytically and numerically, and evaluate and explain his/her results
- conduct simple economic modelling
- use stochastic and statistical methods and tools relevant to his/her field of study
General competences
After completing the course, the cadet is able to:
- communicate with others about stochastic and economic models both orally, in writing and using a system of formulas.
- explain how risk can be modelled, measured and calculated
- refer to how new knowledge and methods in stochastic modelling are developed, and what significance this has for the field of engineering
Emphasis is placed on using examples from other technical courses and from service in the Navy to illustrate topics in the course.
Approximately 16 hours of work per week is expected (lectures, problem solving, project work, independent study).
Examination is carried out according to the Regulations for Admission, Studies and Examinations (in Norwegian, “Forskrift om opptak, studier og eksamen”) at the Norwegian Defence University College.
