Course content

At the end of the course the cadet will have a broad knowledge in electromagnetic waves, as well as in applications within microwaves (waveguide, radar) and electro-optics.

The course covers the following academic content: interference and diffraction, light refraction and reflection, lenses and image formation, photons, emission and absorption of light, thermal radiation, black and grey bodies, quantum states in atoms, laser, simple energy band theory (semi-conductor physics), electro-optical sensors, electromagnetic waves in waveguides, mode and critical frequency, microwave components, radar.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:

  • describe key concepts related to electromagnetic waves
  • explain basic relationships between different phenomena both in electro-optics and microwaves (waveguide)

Skills

After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:

  • apply a relevant set of concepts and formulae
  • use her or his knowledge to create mathematical models of selected phenomena
  • reason systematically, solve specific electromagnetic wave problems, and provide details of the results
  • provide details of basic phenomena and practical applications in electro-optics and microwaves (waveguide and radar)

General competence

After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:

  • explain specific topics in electro-optics and applications in microwave theory
  • communicate with others on the subject

The course is coordinated with ING3313 Electromagnetism and signatures

Sensor system

Examination is carried out according to the Regulations for Admission, Studies and Examinations (in Norwegian, “Forskrift om opptak, studier og eksamen”) at the Norwegian Defence University College.
