ING3506 Role and communication 2
The purpose of the course is to provide the students with a cultural understanding and inter-cultural communication skills as a basis for international operations and cooperation.
The course shall develop the students’ understanding of their role as cyber engineers in the Armed Forces and for the management of av Communication and Information Systems(CIS) and cyber operations both at home and abroad.
The course is based on ING1501 The Cyber engineer’s profession, ING3501 Role and communication 1 and OR5 education
Course topics
- Cultural understanding, culture and negotiation on meaning.
- Communication models and the cultural filter model.
- Inter-cultural competence and understanding.
- Cultural characteristics and handling of culture-related problems where Norwegian forces are contributors.
- The gender perspective and impact on operations.
- Understanding of different types of military Communication and Information (CIS)/cyber operations nationally and internationally
- Culture-related problems within the Armed Forces and our partners in international operations
- Management in the cyber domain
Special circumstances related to the assessments
Both assessment units must be passed to pass the entire course. If the assessments fail in and out of the assessments, there will be a continuation in this assessment with the same framework as the ordinary assessment.
Knowledge
After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:
- describe cultural frames of reference and their significance for military operations and international cooperation.
- describe communication models and the significance of various forms of communication in an inter-cultural context.
- describe the culture’s and language’s (verbal/non-verbal) significance in multinational departments and staffs.
- describe management of military Communication and Information Systems (CIS) – and cyber operations nationally and internationally.
- describe military cultures in the Norwegian branches of the armed forces and among other nations, including the role as specialist and the role as offices.
Skills
After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:
- adapt conduct and form of expression to the relevant cultural and military context
- cooperate efficiently in a multi-cultural department.
- develop a good understanding of their role as cyber engineers and for leadership in the cyber domain
General competence
After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:
- demonstrate a basic attitude to own and others’ culture and religion characterised by respect, security, openness and tolerance.
- apply gender perspective and adapt their actions to the historical, cultural and political context in question.
- become aware of own role as military cyber engineer and of management of military Communication and Information Systems (CIS) and cyber operations in particular, and the first service location in particular.
- appropriately adapt execution of his/her role to changed assumptions, including within different branches of the service in Norway and in cooperation with other nations
Lectures, assignment solving, group/plenary discussions, reflection log, news briefs in English, “Letter of Introduction” and case studies
Examination is carried out according to the Regulations for Admission, Studies and Examinations (in Norwegian, “Forskrift om opptak, studier og eksamen”) at the Norwegian Defence University College.
