ING3505 Statistics and economics
Course content
Discrete mathematics provides the students with knowledge and an understanding of certain concepts and problems in set theory and combinatorics, which contributes to logical and analytical problem solving in the field of engineering in the Armed Forces.
Statistics will provide an introduction to basic concepts and methods in descriptive statistics, probability calculation, distributions and statistical methodology. This provides a basis that contributes to the understanding of information processing, and how statistical methods may be used for planning, control and in interpretation and decision phases.
The economics part of the course shall provide the students with an introduction to basic economic concepts and decision models, and give the students an understanding of economics. This forms the basis for conducting operations in the Armed Forces in a responsible manner where the economy is an aid to achieve this. The course builds on ING1502 Mathematical methods 1.
The subtopics Discrete mathematics and Statistics are taught by a representative from NTNU/Gjøvik. These/this representative is responsible for implementing the subtopics in accordance with this course description.
Course topics
• Set theory
• Combinatorics
• Number theory

Special conditions related to the assessments
Both partial examinations must be passed. Any resit is in the assessment unit the candidate has failed.
Knowledge
After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:
• explain the content of the central concepts in set theory and combinatorics
• explain relevant formulas and arithmetic rules in discrete mathematics
• refer to basic connection between statistics and applications in real life
• demonstrate and understanding of critical usage of statistics
• explain different forms of governance and the Norwegian Armed Forces' management model
• demonstrate a precise understanding of cost concepts
• refer to calculations as a basis for budgeting
Skills
After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:
• arrange and calculate with formulas in discrete mathematics
• calculate with symbols and formulas in statistics
• be able to apply relevant academic tools
• use contribution calculation in budgeting
General competence
After completion of the course, the cadet is able to:
• use own words to describe the application and significance of statistics on engineering problems
• use own words to describe the concept “responsible management” and about economics as an aid to achieve this
Lectures (online lectures in statistics), exercises and statistics project with Python.
Examination is carried out according to the Regulations for Admission, Studies and Examinations (in Norwegian, “Forskrift om opptak, studier og eksamen”) at the Norwegian Defence University College.
